Hair and scalp diagnosis in Barcelona with a professional camera: what your scalp reveals

septiembre 22, 2026 · Hair Diagnosis

A scalp analysis in Barcelona is exactly what it sounds like: a close, magnified look at your scalp and hair fibre using a professional camera — the kind that shows things the naked eye simply cannot see. At Men’s Lab, on Carrer de Londres 67 in the Eixample, we use this tool at the start of a session to understand what is actually happening before we recommend any routine or product.

The process takes around 15 to 20 minutes. We move the camera across different zones of your scalp, review the images together, and give you a clear picture of what we find — follicle condition, hair density, oiliness, flaking, and the overall state of each hair strand. No guesswork, no generic advice.

This is not a medical diagnosis. If the images suggest something that goes beyond the scope of a barbershop — a skin condition, significant hair loss, or anything that needs clinical attention — we will tell you honestly and point you towards a dermatologist. What we can do is give you real, visual information to work from.

What does the professional camera actually show?

The magnifying camera used at Men’s Lab is designed for trichological assessment — the kind used by hair specialists and some dermatology clinics, not a phone attachment. At high magnification, it captures detail that a visual check during a normal haircut would never catch.

Specifically, we look at:

  • Follicle condition — are follicles open and active, miniaturised, or showing signs of blockage?
  • Hair density — how many hairs per follicle unit, and whether density varies across different zones
  • Sebum and oiliness — excess oil at the root, which can affect how the scalp breathes
  • Flaking and dryness — the type and distribution of flaking (not all dandruff looks the same up close)
  • Hair fibre condition — porosity, breakage points, and the general state of the shaft from root to tip

Each of these tells a different part of the story. Someone with persistent dandruff and someone with thinning at the crown need completely different approaches — and the camera makes that distinction visible rather than assumed.

Who is this for?

Most of the men who book a Hair and Scalp Diagnosis at Men’s Lab fall into one of a few categories. Some have noticed their hair thinning and want to understand whether it is a follicle issue, a scalp environment problem, or something to take to a doctor. Others have tried several shampoos for dandruff or an itchy scalp without lasting results and want to know why.

Fine hair that lacks volume, a scalp that feels greasy by midday, or hair that seems to break more than it used to — these are all valid reasons to come in. And some clients simply want to know what is going on up there. Curiosity is a perfectly good reason.

There is no minimum age or hair type requirement. We have carried out over 500 diagnoses at Men’s Lab, and the findings vary enormously from one person to the next — which is exactly the point.

What happens after the diagnosis?

Once we have reviewed the images together, we sit down and talk through what we found. The recommendations that follow are tied directly to what the camera showed — not a standard script.

That might mean a specific washing frequency, a product type suited to your scalp’s sebum level, or a change to how you are currently styling. If your scalp shows signs that warrant a follow-up scan in a few weeks or months, we will suggest that too. Progress is easier to track when you have a baseline to compare against.

If you are also due for a cut or a beard tidy, the diagnosis pairs well with a full session — you can combine it with a haircut and beard trim in Barcelona on the same visit. That way the stylist already knows your scalp condition when choosing how to finish the cut.

Is a scalp analysis the same as a dermatology appointment?

No — and it is worth being clear about that. A scalp analysis at a barbershop is a professional assessment of scalp and hair condition using specialised equipment. It is not a clinical diagnosis and cannot replace a dermatologist when one is needed.

What it does well is give you a detailed visual picture of your scalp environment, which is genuinely useful for building a better hair care routine and catching changes early. If the images show something that looks like a skin condition, significant inflammation, or accelerated hair loss beyond what lifestyle and routine can address, we will say so clearly and recommend you see a specialist. That referral is part of the service, not an admission of limitation.

You can read more about how we approach hair and scalp care on the Men’s Lab blog, where we cover everything from beard hydration to scalp health in plain language.

How to prepare for your appointment

Come with your scalp in its usual state. That means no special treatment the night before — no heavy oils, no scalp masks. We want to see your scalp as it normally is, not as it is on a good day.

Clean hair is fine. Slightly oily hair is fine too, and actually useful if excess sebum is one of your concerns. The session itself is comfortable — the camera is light, there is no heat or discomfort, and you can ask questions throughout.

Men’s Lab is open Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:30 and from 15:30 to 20:00, and Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00. All appointments are by prior booking. The studio has air conditioning and all materials used are single-use — something worth knowing if you have a sensitive scalp.

Frequently asked questions about scalp analysis in Barcelona

How long does the Hair and Scalp Diagnosis take at Men’s Lab?

The session takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. That includes the camera scan across multiple scalp zones and a review of the findings together, followed by specific routine and product recommendations based on what we see.

Do I need to have a haircut at the same appointment?

Not at all. The diagnosis is a standalone service and can be booked on its own. That said, many clients combine it with a full scalp diagnosis session and a cut on the same visit, which makes sense if you are already coming in.

Will the camera work on very short or shaved hair?

Yes — in fact, very short hair often makes it easier to reach different scalp zones clearly. The camera assesses the scalp itself and the base of each hair shaft, so length is not a limiting factor.

Can the diagnosis tell me if my hair loss is permanent?

The camera can show the condition of your follicles and flag patterns worth investigating, but it cannot provide a clinical diagnosis of the type or cause of hair loss. If the images suggest a pattern that needs medical evaluation, we will refer you to a dermatologist.
